Imaginen que quieren hacer una remodelación de su casa y cuando empiezan a hacer excavaciones se dan cuenta que su casa está construida sobre los vestigios de un antiguo teatro romano. Esto es precisamente lo que le sucedió a los propietarios de esta casa, a los que el gobierno les dio una indemnización (o por lo menos eso nos dijo el guía) y tuvieron que mudarse para que se construyera el museo de Nápoles subterránea.

El recorrido está muy bien hecho: uno entra a lo que es una simulación de la antigua casa, con un dormitorio del cual el guía levanta la cama del suelo y se accede a las gradas para bajar a toda la parte subterránea. Lo primero que se visita son los vestigios del teatro romano, donde se entra a los pasillos que recorrían los actores antes de presentarse en escena. Es particularmente interesante ver los diferentes métodos constructivos, las bases y los arcos en ladrillo de barro y las paredes en piedra volcánica, con una forma particular, de manera que la pared fuera anti-sísmica.

Imagine you want to remodel your house and when you start digging up you find out your place is built on top of an ancient Roman theatre. This is precisely what happened to the owners of this house, who were given an indenisation by the government (or so we were told by the guide) and they had to move so that the subterranean Naples museum was built.

The visit is very well made: you enter to a simulation of the original home, a bedroom in which the guide lifts up the bed and shows the stairs that lead to the subterranean part. The first thing you visit are the Roman theatre vestiges, where you go into the hallways that actors walked through before going on stage. It’s particularly interesting to watch the different construction methods, the foundations and arches in brick and the walls in volcanic stone, with a particular shape that allowed the wall to be antiseismic.

La segunda parte consiste en una exhibición de pesebres del siglo XVIII. Los pesebres son una gran tradición napolitana. El interés de estos pesebres es que mezclan escenas religiosas sobre fondos de arquitectura antigua.

The second part is an exhibition of Christmas cribs from the XVIIIth century. Cribs are a great Neapolitan tradition. The interest of this cribs is that put religious scenes over antique architecture backgrounds.

La tercera parte del recorrido está dedicada al refugio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En algunas partes recrean los antiguos usos del subterráneo con figuras metálicas y algunos artefactos de la época. La mejor parte es cuando se entra a unos laberintos a oscuras con la iluminación de las candelas que cada persona lleva.

The third part of the visit is dedicated to the part that was a World War II refuge. Some parts recreate the ancient uses of the tunnels with metallic figures and some artefacts from the period. The best part is where you go inside some dark labyrinths with candles that everyone carries around for lighting.

Nápoles subterránea es igual de interesante que la Nápoles al exterior. Y si tienen la suerte de tener el carismático guía que nos acompañó, es seguro que van a disfrutar el paseo.
