El Museo Nacional de Praga está compuesto por dos edificios, uno del siglo XIX, que está en reparación, y uno del siglo XX, que fue el que pudimos visitar. Me encantó el edificio, que me pareció severo y monumental. Las exposiciones fueron dos buenas sorpresas, una sobre la muerte y otra sobre el Arca de Noé.
Prague’s National Museum is composed of two buildings, one from the 19th century, which is currently being renovated, and one from the 20th century, which is the one we visited. I loved the building; I found it severe and monumental. The exhibitions were two good surprises, one on death and the other on Noah’s ark.
La primera exposición explicaba cómo se trata la muerte según diferentes aspectos: la muerte en la naturaleza, a través de diferentes civilizaciones a lo largo de la Historia, los rituales asociados a la muerte, las ciencias forenses, etc. Tenía diversos objetos que iban desde objetos arqueológicos, animales embalsamados, canciones fúnebres, hasta textos explicativos sobre la formación que se puede cursar en República Checa para trabajar en un cementerio. La exposición fue exhaustiva sin saturarte de información y fue muy entretenida, especialmente considerando el tema.
The first exhibition explained death according to different aspects: death in nature, in different civilizations over time, the rituals associated with death, forensic sciences, etc. It had all sorts of objects, from archaeological pieces, animals, funerary songs, to texts explaining how to become a cemetery employee in Czech Republic. The exhibition was thorough but not overwhelmingly filled with information and it was very entertaining, especially considering the subject.

La segunda exposición se llamaba “El Arca de Noé”. Tenía mucha curiosidad de ver si efectivamente era sobre la historia de la Biblia. Afortunadamente es un museo serio y la exposición era de Historia natural. Su propósito era en realidad de hacer un inventario de los animales a través del planeta, porque tomando en cuenta que varios de entre ellos están en peligro de extinción tiene que quedar un registro de ellos para que no sean olvidados. Me pareció un concepto muy hermoso y muy triste. Especialmente porque la exposición denuncia la caza y la destrucción del hábitat de los animales, pero los museos y los zoológicos son en parte responsables de la desaparición de los animales al capturarlos, sacarlos de su ambiente natural y luego mostrar sus cadáveres en exposiciones.
Más allá de eso, como lo muestran las fotos, la escenografía era impresionante. El centro de la sala lo ocupaba una estructura de madera que simulaba un barco y que se adaptaba muy bien al cielo falso. Me pareció un excelente trabajo en todos los niveles. Habían muchas familias con niños, pero los adultos la podían disfrutar la exposición sin ninguna dificultad.
Definitivamente que cualquier visita de Praga tiene que incluir el Museo Nacional.
The second exhibition was titled “Noah’s Ark”. I was very curious to see if it was on the biblical story. Fortunately this is a serious museum and it was a Natural history exhibition. Its purpose was actually to make an inventory of animals on the planet because, knowing that many of them are in danger of extinction, there must be some sort of record of them so they are not forgotten. I found this concept both beautiful and sad. Especially because the exhibition denounces hunting and the destruction of the animals’ habitat, but museums and zoos are in part responsible for the disappearing of animals when they capture them, they take them out of the normal environment and then they show them in exhibitions.
But beyond all of this, as the pictures show, the display was quite impressive. In the center of the room there was a wooden structure simulating a boat and which went very well with the ceiling. I found it an excellent work in all levels. There were a lot of families with children, but adults on their own could enjoy the exhibition without any difficulty.
A visit to Prague must definitely include the National Museum.
