Uno de los lugares que descubrí que más me gustó de mi visita a Berlín fue la Iglesia del recuerdo del emperador Guillermo Iero. Del templo original sólo queda una torre, luego que fue bombardeada durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Una segunda torre y una capilla fueron construidas por el arquitecto Egon Eiermann, inauguradas en 1961.
One of the places I discovered during my recent trip to Berlin was the Memorial Church of Kaiser Wilhelm the Ist. From the original temple only remains one tower, after it was bombed during World War II. A second tower and a chapel were built by architect Egon Eiermann, completed in 1961.
La iglesia es preciosa. La parte moderna forma un contraste evidente con la torre antigua y al mismo tiempo juntas forman un buen equipo. Al parecer hay que venir a verla de noche, cuando los ladrillos de vidrio dejan pasar la luz que viene del interior. Pero aún de día el interior de la capilla es impresionante.
Me parece que esta iglesia es una buena metáfora de Berlín como ciudad. Es una obra marcada por el pasado - por la destrucción del pasado sobre todo - pero que no teme ver hacia adelante. Y aunque no soy religiosa me gusta saber que hay lugares y construcciones como esta que son una prueba de la fe en el futuro.
The church is gorgeous. The modern part forms an evident contrast with the old tower and at the same time they form a very good team together. Apparently you must come at night, when the glass bricks let through the light from inside. But even during the day the interior of the chapel is impressive.
I think this church is a good metaphor for Berlin as a city. It’s a work marked by its past – by the destruction of its past mostly – but who’s not afraid to look forward. And even though I’m not religious I like knowing that there places and buildings like these which are proof of the faith in the future.
