Gruyère(s)

El queso gruyère toma su nombre del pueblo de donde es originario. Pues fue justamente Gruyères que la oficina de Relaciones internacionales de mi universidad nos invitó a descubrir a los becarios de ese año. Viendo estas fotos de 2014 me doy cuenta lo atrasada que voy en mi programa de posts y qué rápido ha pasado el tiempo desde que estoy aquí.

The gruyère cheese takes its name from the village where it’s from. It was precisely Gruyères that the International relations office from my university invited us, scholarship holders, to discover. Looking at these pictures from 2014 I realize how late I am in my posting program and how fast time has gone by since I’ve been here.

El viaje fue la quintaesencia de la experiencia suiza: empezó con una visita de la fábrica de chocolates Cailler, seguida de una visita de una fábrica de queso, fondue de almuerzo, un paseo por el pueblo y un recorrido en un tren panorámico.

La fábrica Cailler es el segundo lugar dedicado al chocolate que visito después del museo del chocolate en Barcelona. En la fábrica, la visita empieza con un recorrido a través de la historia del chocolate, con un diorama súper kitsch que desgraciadamente salió muy mal en las fotos porque es todo oscuro. Pero empieza con una sala estilo “maya”, así que pude irme tranquila.

El resto de la visita es sobre cómo se fabrica el chocolate en esta fábrica, pero las máquinas están detrás de una vitrina. La mejor parte es la degustación de todas las variedades disponibles de chocolate de esta marca.

The trip was the quintessential Swiss experience: it started with a visit of the Cailler chocolate factory, followed by a visit of a cheese factory, fondue for lunch, a stroll around town, and a ride in a panoramic train.

The Cailler factory is the second place devoted to chocolate that I’ve been to after the chocolate museum in Barcelona. In the factory, the visit starts with a tour through the history of chocolate, featuring a super kitsch diorama that unfortunately I was not able to photograph properly because it was really dark. But it starts with a “Mayan” room, so I left satisfied.

The rest of the visit deals with how chocolate is produced in this factory, but the machines are all behind glass panels. The best part is a tasting of all the available varieties of chocolate of this brand.

La visita de fábrica de queso gruyère estuvo animada por “Cerise” (Cereza), la vaquita narradora de la audioguía, que nos explicó cómo se fabrica el queso en cuestión. No habían muchos objetos interesantes en la visita, y las máquinas no estaban en uso cuando estuvimos allí, pero igual hubo una muestra gratis de queso al final, así que nos fuimos contentos.

The visit to the cheese factory was animated by “Cerise” (Cherry), the cow narrator of the audioguide, who explained to us how the cheese in question is made. There were not that many interesting objects to look at and the machines were not being used when we were there, but nonetheless we got a free sample of cheese in the end, so we left satisfied.

Me arrepiento de no haber tomado fotos de la fondue del almuerzo. En mi opinión, merece igual de apreciación que los paisajes del pueblo.

¿Qué ondas que Gruyères tiene un museo de H.R. Giger, el creador de Alien? No tuvimos tiempo de visitarlo, pero es suficiente razón para regresar, aunque no dejan tomar fotos. De hecho, pocos días después de nuestra visita Giger falleció, me dio pesar.

I regret not taking pictures of the fondue we had at lunch. In my opinion, it deserved as much attention as the landscapes of the village.

Did you know that Gruyères has a museum devoted to H.R. Giger, Alien’s creator? We didn’t have time to visit it, but it’s reason enough to go back, even though they don’t allow taking pictures. In fact, few days after our visit Giger passed away, such a shame.
