Münster

Hay muchas cosas que voy a recordar de Münster, el hermoso lugar donde Esther estudia. Para empezar, que es la ciudad con la mayor proporción de bicicletas por habitante en Alemania: en promedio, hay dos bicicletas por persona. Cuando se camina por la calle y especialmente al cruzar, hay que prestar atención de no ser aplastado por un ciclista, no se recomienda caminar en las pistas que se les han apartado y hay que tener mucho cuidado con su bicicleta, ya que los robos son muy frecuentes.

Esther vive en un apartamento cerca de la antigua zona portuaria con dos compañeros. Uno de ellos, Sven, nos acompañó durante nuestro road trip en dirección a Hamburgo. Pero me adelanto. Pudimos conocer a los otros amigos de Esther, chavos muy simpáticos y acogedores que en cierta forma ya conocíamos porque Esther siempre nos habló de ellos. Comimos juntos en el restaurante de su universidad, la “mensa” en alemán, donde la variedad de platillos, especialmente la diversidad de comidas vegetarianas era impresionante.

There are many things I’ll remember of Münster, the beautiful place where Esther studies. For starters, it’s the city with the greatest ratio of bikes per inhabitant in Germany: in average, there are two bikes per person. When you walk in the streets and especially when crossing, you must pay attention not to get hit by a cyclist; it’s not recommended to walk on the bike lanes and you must be careful with your bikes since thefts are pretty frequent.

Esther lives in an apartment near the old port zone with two other roommates. One of them, Sven, came with us in our road trip to Hamburg. But I’m getting ahead of myself. We got to meet Esther’s friends, very nice and welcoming people that in a way we sort of knew already, since Esther always talked to us about them. We ate together at the university cafeteria, the “mensa” in German, where the variety of dishes and especially the diversity of vegetarian foods were astounding.

Aprovechamos del clima cálido y de los días soleados para hacer una barbacoa frente al lago. Fue la barbacoa más saludable de mi vida ya que muchos amigos de Esther no comen carne, algo que suena contradictorio cuando se trata de asar comida. Pero aprendí que los tomates rellenos de queso se asan muy bien. Había mucha ensalada, cerveza naturalmente y una cantidad casi simbólica de carne. En un momento completamente surrealista, una señora llegó al parque arrastrando una carreta con un maniquí de una mujer desnuda. Le tomó fotos frente al lago y luego en medio de los grupos de personas que también estaban haciendo pic-nics. En un momento la sentó con nosotros. Era una antigua maestra de arte y tomaba esas fotos para uno proyecto que estaba desarrollando.

We enjoyed the warm weather and the sunny days with a barbecue in front of the lake. It was the healthiest barbecue I’ve been in my whole life because many of Esther’s friends don’t eat meat, something that sounds contradictory when it comes to grilling food. But I learned that tomatoes filled with cheese cook up very well in a grill. There was a lot of salad, beer naturally and just a symbolic quantity of meat. In a completely surreal moment, a lady came to the park dragging a cart with a mannequin of a naked woman on top of it. She took pictures of her in front of the lake and in the middle of the groups of people having pic-nicks. At some moment she placed it amongst us. She was a former art teacher who was taking those pictures for some project she was working on.

Tomamos mucha cerveza pero sobre todo en formas que nunca hubiera imaginado posibles. Es una práctica muy común tomar cerveza con Sprite o con Coca-Cola, al punto que ya se vende la “Cola beer”, donde el refresco de cola viene mezclado con la cerveza. Fuimos a tomar a un bar a orilla del río cerveza con jugo de banano y otra con pedazos de melocotón, esta última mi preferida.

We drank a lot of beer but above all in ways I would have never imagined possible. It’s very common to drink beer with Sprite or Coke, to the point where they sell “Cola beer”, in which the cola is already mixed with the beer. We went to a bar near the river where we had a beer with banana juice and another with pieces of apricot, this last one was my favorite.

La ciudad es hermosa, con edificios y casas que parecen salidos de cuentos de hadas; un sendero peatonal que rodea la ciudad y que está ambientado con árboles altísimos; el edificio administrativo de la universidad, un antiguo palacio del siglo XVIII con un hermoso jardín botánico en sus alrededores. Y no puedo dejar de mencionar el súper apartamento de Esther, donde al encender la puerta del baño se enciende automáticamente la radio. Todo el lugar está lleno de afiches e imágenes muy chistosas. Ingenioso, divertido y práctico a la vez.

The city is beautiful, with buildings and houses that seem to belong in fairy tales; a pedestrian way that surrounds the city with very tall trees; the university’s administration building, a former XVIIIth century castle with a beautiful botanic garden on its vicinity. And I can’t leave behind Esther’s super apartment, where when you turn the light of the bathroom on the radio automatically is turned on as well. The whole place is filled with cool posters and images. It’s inventive, fun and practical, all at once.
