Le couvent des Annonciades / DRAC

El convento de la Anunciación es un edificio del siglo XVI que alberga actualmente la Dirección Regional de Asuntos Culturales (DRAC) de la región de Aquitaine en Bordeaux. Del edificio original sobreviven la capilla y el claustro, pero en el resto se construyeron oficinas en 1994 por la agencia Brochet/Lajus/Pueyo, de las firmas más famosas de arquitectos en la ciudad, junto con el arquitecto Philippe Carle.

The convent of the Annonciade is a XVIth century building currently occupied by the Regional Direction of Cultural Affairs (DRAC) of the Aquitaine region in Bordeaux. From the original building the chapel and the cloister survive, but the rest was turned into offices in 1994 by the agency Brochet/Lajus/Pueyo, one of the most famous architecture firms in the city, in collaboration with architect Philippe Carle.

Le quartier de Mériadeck

Uno de mis lugares favoritos en Bordeaux es el barrio Mériadeck, situado en el centro de la ciudad, justo detrás de la alcaldía. Es un área de más de treinta hectáreas donde los edificios fueron construidos en los años 60s y 70s siguiendo los preceptos de la arquitectura Moderna. Todo este enclave contrasta enormemente con los edificios antiguos del centro histórico que lo rodean. En efecto, la zona que ahora conforma el barrio fue demolida completamente en la década de los 60 al ser juzgada insalubre por la municipalidad. Hay que saber que en el periodo en el que se construyó el barrio el alcalde Jacques Chaban-Delmas soñaba con que Bordeaux se convirtiera en una ciudad moderna, donde los rascacielos iban a remplazar a los edificios antiguos.

One of my favorite places in Bordeaux is the Mériadeck neighborhood, located in the city’s center, behind the town hall. It’s a area of more than thirty hectares where the buildings were built in the 60s and 70s following the precepts of Modern architecture. Thus this whole enclave greatly contrasts with the city’s historical center ancient buildings that surround it. Indeed, the zone that forms the actual neighborhood was completely demolished during the 60s because it was deemed unsalutary by the municipality. It must be said that at the time mayor Jacques Chaban-Delmas dreamt of Bordeaux becoming a great modern city, where skyscrapers would replace historical buildings.

L’Amphithéâtre du Palais Gallien

Los restos del anfiteatro del Palais Gallien es lo único que queda de este edificio de finales del primer siglo, de la época en que Bordeaux era una ciudad romana conocida como Burdigala.

The remnants of the amphitheatre of the Palais Gallien is the only thing left out of this building of the late 1st century AD, from the time when Bordeaux was a Roman city known as Burdigala.

La Bastide Saint-Louis

Qué mala que soy, estaba a punto de escribir un post sobre cómo el centro histórico de Carcassonne es pequeñito y se puede ver en un día, es incómodo porque dejan entrar carros, no es amigable con los turistas porque los buses sólo pasan a cada hora y la arquitectura no tiene nada de extraordinaria, porque al parecer pasar dos años en Bordeaux me convirtió en toda una snob. Pero viendo las fotos de nuestro paseo, el pueblo me parece hermoso, acogedor y tiene unas mezclas de edificios muy interesantes. Vale la pena imprimir una hoja con los horarios de los buses para ir a visitarlo.

La Bastide Saint-Louis es el centro de la ciudad que antes se encontraba amurallado. Las murallas fueron reemplazadas por bulevares que permiten el paso de vehículos, pero si uno se cuida de ser apachurrado por un conductor harto de ver turistas en verano, se pueden ver lugares y monumentos muy interesantes.

I’m a bad person, I was just about to write a post about how Carcassonne’s historic center is tiny and therefore can be visited in one day; it’s uncomfortable because they let cars in; it’s unfriendly towards tourists because there buses only every hour and the architecture is nothing extraordinary, because apparently spending two years in Bordeaux has turned me into a total snob. However, looking at the pictures of our trip, the town seems lovely, cosy and has a very interesting mixture of buildings. It’s worth printing a bus schedule to visit it.

La Bastide Saint-Louis is the city’s center that used to be surrounded by walls. These walls have been replaced by boulevards that allow cars to get in, but if you’re careful enough not to get crushed by a driver sick of tourists during summer, you can see some interesting sites and monuments.

La cité de Carcassonne

Ya he dicho, en múltiples ocasiones, que si volviera a nacer me haría castelóloga medieval. Aprendería latín y paleografía y mi vida consistiría en descifrar archivos de hace cientos de años, para poder reconstituir las ruinas de estos hermosos edificios. Tal vez este sueño frustrado sea el resultado de mis clases de maestría, donde mi profesor extremadamente serio parecía brillar de la emoción cuando nos explicaba su profesión. Fueron de las clases que más me gustaron, no sólo porque las lecciones eran interesantes y estabas muy bien estructuradas, también daba ganas de seguir investigando por su propia cuenta. Terminé irremediablemente enamorada de toda la cultura de la Edad Media y de los castillos por supuesto.

I’ve said before, many times, that if I were to be born again I would become a medieval castelologist. I would learn Latin and paleography and my life would be devoted to deciphering archives from hundreds of years back, in order to be able to reconstitute the ruins of these beautiful buildings. Maybe this frustrated dream is the result of my Masters classes where my extremely serious professor seemed to glow of excitement when he explained to us his work. Those were some of the courses I enjoyed the most, not only because the lessons were interesting and very well structured, but because they motivated you to keep researching on your own. I ended up hopelessly in love with medieval culture and its castles of course.

La isla de Amapala

Algunas imágenes de un paseo por Amapala, una isla que había visitado hace muchos años pero de la cual no recordaba el pueblo. Menos mal que volví, porque redescubrí que tiene parques muy bonitos y hermosas casas de madera con mucho color.

Some images from a stroll around Amapala, an island I visited many years ago. However, I didn’t remember its village. Luckily I came back, because I got to rediscover it has very nice parks and beautiful and colorful wooden houses.

You’ll never walk alone: "Stadium" in Arc en rêve, centre d'architecture

“Stadium” es una exposición del centro de arquitectura “Arc en rêve” en Bordeaux que presenta el proyecto para el futuro estadio de la ciudad por los arquitectos Herzog & de Meuron y aprovecha para analizar el fenómeno de las instalaciones deportivas en general. La exposición tiene tres ejes: mostrar ejemplos famosos de estadios alrededor del mundo, recordar eventos deportivos grabados en la historia y ver el deporte y este tipo de construcciones a través del lente del arte contemporáneo con algunas obras sobre el tema.

“Stadium” is an exhibit from the architecture center “Arc en rêve” in Bordeaux that presents the city’s future stadium project by architects Herzog & de Meuron and analyzes as well the phenomenon of sports grounds in general. The exhibit is constituted around three axes: it shows famous examples of stadiums across the world, it recalls memorable sporting events throughout history and it looks at sports and at their buildings through the lens of contemporary art with some works dealing with these subjects.

Le Mont-Saint-Michel

Se dice que un francés visita el Mont-Saint-Michel un promedio de cinco veces en su vida. Y menos mal porque, al ser de los sitios turísticos más visitados del país, parte de sus fondos contribuyen a que otros sitios menos afortunados se financien.

El atractivo del lugar es que es una isla sobre la cual se construyó una abadía y con el tiempo un pueblo y sus murallas. La evolución del sitio es evidente en las maquetas.

It has been said that French people visit the Mont-Saint-Michel an average of five times in their lifetime. And that’s a good thing, since being one of the most visited touristic sites in the country allows part of its revenues to support less fortunate historical monuments.

What is interesting about this place is that it’s an island where an abbey was built on top and where later a village and the walls were constructed. The evolution of the site is explained through these models.

El pueblo se ha convertido en un complejo de tiendas de souvenirs, restaurantes y hasta un hotel, pero la abadía todavía alberga una fraternidad de monjes que es la responsable de las misas en la iglesia. La abadía es impresionante, tiene un claustro de cuatro pisos, donde debajo del jardín estaba la cocina, las salas para recibir a los nobles cuando estaban de visita y otra para las visitas más modestas. El paseo es también un buen ejercicio: se suben muchas gradas y la vista es hermosa. Definitivamente se entiende porqué la gente querría venir hasta cinco veces aquí.

The village has become a complex of souvenir shops, restaurants and even a hotel, but the abbey still houses a fraternity of monks and nuns responsible for the masses in the church. The abbey is impressive, it has a four-story cloister where below the garden there was a kitchen, the rooms that housed the royal family when they visited and another one for more modest visitors. The outing is a good exercise as well: you have to climb a lot of stairs and the view from above is beautiful. I can see why people would want to come here at least five times.
