En Praga, como en cualquier ciudad que visito ahora, busqué dónde habían exposiciones de arquitectura. Antes de ir había identificado dos lugares: el Museo Técnico Nacional, con una colección principalmente de los siglos XIX y XX y la Galería Jaroslava Fragnera, que solía pertenecer a la Unión de Arquitectos Checos. Pero mi gran sorpresa y de largo mis exposiciones preferidas fueron las del Palacio Veletrzni, que es el museo de arte moderno y contemporáneo de la ciudad, que por cierto es sencillamente espectacular.

In Prague, like in any city I visit nowadays, I looked for places that showed architectural exhibitions. Before leaving I had identified two main places: the National Technical Museum, with a collection from mainly the 19th and 20th centuries and the Jaroslava Fragnera Gallery, which used to belong to the Union of Czech Architects. But my biggest surprise, and by far my favorite exhibitions were the ones on the Veletrzni Palace, which is the city’s modern and contemporary art museum, and by the way, it is just spectacular.

El Museo Nacional de Praga está compuesto por dos edificios, uno del siglo XIX, que está en reparación, y uno del siglo XX, que fue el que pudimos visitar. Me encantó el edificio, que me pareció severo y monumental. Las exposiciones fueron dos buenas sorpresas, una sobre la muerte y otra sobre el Arca de Noé.

Prague’s National Museum is composed of two buildings, one from the 19th century, which is currently being renovated, and one from the 20th century, which is the one we visited. I loved the building; I found it severe and monumental. The exhibitions were two good surprises, one on death and the other on Noah’s ark.

Praga es una ciudad absolutamente magnífica, pero hay que saber que tuve que sacrificarme para poder llegar a ella: pasar 18 horas en un bus de Eurolines. Se tiene que ser joven y tener presupuesto de estudiante para aceptar algo semejante, pero tengo que confesar que no me pareció tan mala idea para haberlo aceptado en primer lugar. El trayecto de ida no me pareció tan horrendo, especialmente porque tenía como 10 episodios de “Jane the Virgin” para terminar la primera temporada y porque estaba anticipando todas las cosas por hacer una vez que hubiera llegado.

Prague is an absolutely magnificent city, but I must say that I had to sacrifice myself to get there: I had to spend 18 hours in an Eurolines bus. You must really be young and have a student budget to agree to something like that, but I have to confess that it didn’t seem like such a bad idea if I accepted it in the first place. The trip to get there was not as bad as I thought it would be, especially because I had like 10 episodes of “Jane the Virgin” to finish the first season and because I was anticipating all of the things I would do when I got there.

El último paseo de mis mini-vacaciones en Alemania el julio pasado fue a Esslingen am Neckar, un pueblito cercano a Stuttgart. Mis amigos y yo pasamos una mañana allí, caminando, subiendo gradas, admirando los paisajes y las casitas viejas. Terminamos almorzando en un fast-food alemán donde fuimos víctimas de los ataques de una avispa malvada.

The last trip of my mini-holidays in Germany last July was to Esslingen am Neckar, a small town near Stuttgart. My friends and I spent one morning there, walking, climbing up stairs, contemplating the landscapes and the old houses. We ended up having lunch in a German fast-food where we were attacked by an evil wasp.

La visita obligada en Stuttgart es del Weissenhofsiedlung, el barrio de los años 20 con casas prefabricadas y experimentales diseñadas por arquitectos modernistas. Se puede visitar: la casa doble por Le Corbusier, donde una parte es el museo que explica la historia del proyecto y otra es la versión amueblada de la casa; el resto del barrio con las casas originales que han sobrevivido el paso del tiempo  y una galería de exposiciones de arquitectura contemporánea.

The mandatory visit in Stuttgart is the one of the Weissenhofsiedlung, the neighborhood of the 1920s with prefabricated and experimental houses designed by Modern architects. In here you can visit: the double-house by Le Corbusier, with half of it being the museum that traces the history of the project and the rest is the furnished version of the house; the rest of the neighbourhood with the original houses that have remained standing after all these years and an contemporary architecture exhibition gallery.

No es que necesite de grandes excusas para ir a Alemania en estos momentos, pero la semana pasada tenía buenas razones para estar en Stuttgart: para encontrarme con amigos.

Not that I need a lot of excuses to go to Germany nowadays, but last week I had good reasons to be in Stuttgart: to meet friends.

Debo decir que si no hubiera tenido que ir al museo de Mercedes-Benz en Stuttgart probablemente nunca hubiera ido por voluntad propia. Lo único que me interesa en un carro es que sea capaz de llevarme de un lado a otro. Me imagino que mucha gente ha de sentir lo mismo con respecto a la arquitectura, así que hay que hacer un esfuerzo y tratar de tener un criterio abierto.

Veamos carros entonces.

I must say that if I had not been obliged to go to the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart I would probably never had gone by choice. The only thing I care in a car is its ability to take me from one place to another. And I guess a lot of people must feel that way about architecture, so let’s make an effort and try to keep an open mind.

Let’s look at cars then.

Bristol fue uno de los viajes que casi no tuve tiempo de preparar con anticipación. Pude entonces ir sin ninguna expectativa, a diferencia de otros lugares donde he estado antes. Supe antes de llegar que allí fue donde se grabaron los primeros discos de Portishead y de Massive Attack y que allí se encuentra el estudio de animación de Wallace y Gromit y de Shaun la oveja. Y qué adorable sorpresa que justo en los días en los que estuve allí habían 70 estatuas de Shaun repartidas por toda la ciudad. Con el mismo principio de las vacas en las ciudades, cada una de las estatuas las pinta un artista diferente y al final de su estadía van a ser subastadas para recaudar fondos para una obra caritativa. Los Shauns van a ayudar a hospitales para niños.

Las ovejitas fueron entonces mi motivación para ir a conocer la ciudad.

Bristol was one of the trips I had almost no time to prepare beforehand. I went, therefore, without any expectation, unlike previous destinations. I was aware that it was there that were recorded the first albums of Portishead and Massive Attack and that Wallace and Gromit’s and Shaun the Sheep’s animation studio is there. And what a nice surprise it was that just at the time of my visit there were 70 statues of Shaun scattered across the city. With the same principle of the cows in the cities, each statue is decorated by an artist and at the end of their journey they are auctioned for charity. The Shauns will help children’s hospitals.

It was the sheep who motivated me to get to know the city.
