The Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) is the main, since it is far from being the only, museum devoted to architecture in Germany. It’s important for many reasons: it has an excellent collection of drawings and models from 20th century architects from all over the world; its building is a masterpiece of Postmodernism and museum architecture, and its founder was a very interesting character, to the point where he is still greatly remembered in the architectural museum world.
One of the first things I told Yanis when we were planning the places we would visit in Germany was that I wanted to go to Frankfurt to visit the German Museum of Architecture. I thought that since we were near Berlin and both cities are in the same country they would obviously be near one another, or at least the distance would be shorter between Berlin and Frankfurt than between Geneva and Frankfurt. Turns out that Yanis should have given me a map for Christmas. It was after spending fifteen hours in a bus – that granted, it had wi-fi, but it was a bus – that I realized that we had crossed the entire country just to visit a museum. So in order to maximize the journey we visited the city.
After seeing Versailles, Sanssouci looks like an amateur’s humble imitation. Not because it’s not a beautiful castle, but because it’s more modest in size and in decoration. And let’s face it, something has to be really spectacular to surpass the French palace. However, Sanssouci doesn’t lack in personality and what Versailles doesn’t have is the story of a very original king behind it. We’ve had it with Marie Antoinette, in my opinion Sofia Coppola’s next movie should be about Frederick II, the Great.
One of the cities close to Berlin that we got to visit during the holidays was Postdam. In all honesty, before I went there I had no idea why it is such a touristic spot. Apparently the great “hit” of the place is the Sanssouci castle followed by the historical center, but in my head the pilgrimage was for something else: to see in person Erich Mendelsohn’s Einstein tower.
Having spent a whole day wandering through Warsaw, we had an entire morning to visit one museum before leaving. We had to decide between the National Museum, a fine arts traditional museum, or going to the Copernicus Science Centre, the most recent science museum in the city. We chose this last one because apparently it is so good that people from all over come to visit it and because if there is one person that needs to reinforce her knowledge of the hard sciences is me. Yanis was there to make sure I understood everything, but he ended up playing like a little child and even driving away children so he could play instead.
Poland has never been in my list of places to visit before I die but since Yanis has been relocated near that country I would not waste the opportunity to discover it. And that’s how I started my end-of-the-year vacations in Warsaw. I wish I could say I was expecting a village, where public transportation would require oxen, but truthfully I had no previous idea whatsoever of this place. Turns out Warsaw is a very modern city and extremely cool, and not only because the Backstreet Boys are giving a concert there in July.
In France, between my sedentary life, the unlimited varieties of cheese available and having lunch in the university cafeteria, I ended up gaining weight. I spent the first months without a full-body mirror and I have a tendency to buy stretch pants, so it took a while before I noticed. I knew something had changed when talking with my father on Skype on New Year’s he told me I looked “less bony”. My New Year’s resolution was then to lose weight. I started running with Esther, something I thought I would enjoy if only by genetic reasons, since my father runs 8 km each morning ever since I can remember. But thank God I had my friend to motivate me because running is the most tedious workout in the world. Long story short, I got back my “normal” body until I went back to Honduras and I signed up in the dance academy my mother goes to, in an attempt to shake off the depression for being back in Honduras, more than the fact that I wanted to lose weight. The academy has also spinning classes, so I took them whenever I got bored of salsa and merengue. Again, I noticed something had changed when some ladies came over and asked me why I was so skinny. You definitely cannot please people.
Last Saturday we went to a wine festival in a region near Geneva. I spent the previous two weeks before that telling all of my friends that I was going to the “Bourru”, since the event was called “Discovering the bourru”. I thought that was the name of the town. And I couldn’t have been more wrong: the “bourru” is the grape juice a few days into fermentation.
