Here’s a token of my openness, of my need to not disappear

When I look at my life, I realize that I’m at the place where I worked for so many years to reach. I’m doing what I yearned so hard to do when I was sitting down drawing blueprints, or under the sun in a construction site. I’m living in a country like the ones I used to wish for when I had to study for a test, work in a group on a project, or stay up late drawing while E! Entertainment Television was on, on the background. And yet, I’m not satisfied. I couldn’t be farther away from the person I would like to be, or from the peace of mind I would like to feel.

¿Adónde carajos voy a vivir?

Most of the time I’m alone, sad, and I feel that my work is useless and mediocre. My dissertation is not worth anything, and won’t even help me find a job, since I’ve given up any ambition to pursue the academic path. I will have then spent 5 of the best years in my life sitting down, reading books, for nothing.

Sometimes I think of when I was 17 years old and felt that I had so much potential. I just finished high school with the best grades, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but at least I had a lot of time ahead to find out. At 31 years old, things haven’t changed much: the future is still uncertain and I still don’t know what I will do with my life, but time has gone by and the potential has vanished. Or better said, it was never accomplished.

What have I been doing all this time? How can I find myself at this existential limbo yet again, after everything I have worked and studied? Because I feel that I haven’t stopped: ever since I graduated from high school the only thing I have done was work and study all the time, like an idiot. And yet, I don’t fit anywhere. I was miserable in Honduras trying to get out of there; I’m miserable abroad, but I don’t ever want to go back. I don’t fit with anyone either. I used to think that it has never been so hard to get along with other people as it has been here, but after much thought I realized that I have always been like this. It was just that in Honduras and in Bordeaux I had my groups of people I was never forced to leave. And the worst part is that nothing works. I studied architecture and when I had to work in it, I hated it. I kept doing it hoping to be able to study art history later. And when I finally could, I discovered that it is useless and I’m not even that good in it. And now, what the hell do I do?

Besides, this semester I have been flooded by so many administrative shit, which is only balanced by how much I’ve enjoyed teaching this time. After spending 3 months without a residence permit, having to harass my insurance so that I can cancel my contract, in a month I will have to find another place to live, yet again, in a city where rents are too high for a Ph.D. candidate with a meager scholarship. Nevermind what will become of me after my thesis, what will become of me on June 1st? Where the hell will I live? I don’t want to spend the last year of my thesis, the year in which I will write, living like an intruder with a family, nor with rude and noisy roommates. I want to live by myself, because hell, I’m 31 years old and I deserve to live by myself. But I can’t afford that solitude.

I want to be at peace, I want this to be over, I want to stop thinking and have all these worries fade away.

Dices: “Iré a otra tierra, hacia otro mar

    a las mismas calles y en los mismos suburbios llegará tu vejez;
    en la misma casa encanecerás.

arribes a puertos nunca antes vistos,
